565 Acres Burned, One Structure Lost in Laramie County Grass Fire

More details are being released regarding the grass fire south of Cheyenne Wednesday around 4:30 p.m.

The blaze burned 565 acres around mile marker four along I-25 near Terry Ranch Road and spread rapidly due to strong west winds that threatened homes in the Winchester Hills subdivision.

Evacuation orders were issued for that subdivision. Firefighters from across the county worked together to contain the blaze as law enforcement went door to door notifying residents. A brief rain shower aided firefighters in helping slow the fire. At around 6:30 PM, the fire was contained. Residents were able to return to their homes at around 8:30 PM.

Fire personnel stayed in the area overnight, extinguishing hot spots that popped up. A greenhouse was the only structure reported lost. The fire burned right up to the yards of the homes on the west side of the subdivision.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
