As part of the 150th anniversary of women’s suffrage, Visit Cheyenne and the City of Cheyenne have unveiled a new Big Boot to commemorate the celebration. The boot is located at 1701 Capitol Ave, the site where women first voted in Cheyenne (near the Wells Fargo Bank Drive-Through). The boot’s art was designed and painted by local artist Cathy Nicholas.
The hand-painted boot depicts a Victorian woman voting at the Alert Hose Company Fire Station where women first voted on September 6, 1870. The boot joins the suffrage mural at the corner of 17th and Carey Avenue as public art pieces celebrating the 150th anniversary. These pieces add to the robust public art scene in Cheyenne and serve as attractions for both residents and visitors.
“Cheyenne is filled with such rich history,” said Cheyenne Mayor Marion Orr. “The completion of this Suffrage Big Boot not only commemorates history in Cheyenne and the state of Wyoming but for our country. We are honored to add this Big Boot in Cheyenne and specifically at the site where the first female vote was cast in the Capital City. It is a fitting tribute to our celebration of Women’s Suffrage. I commend all the hard work put into this project by the boot’s artist, Cathy Nicholas, and our partners at Visit Cheyenne.”
