On January 2, the Laramie County Clerk’s Office informed the Sheriff’s Office that a number of individuals who voted in the 2024 primary or general elections had been flagged for potential voting irregularities. These concerns were based on two primary factors: citizenship status and prior felony convictions.
Thirteen individuals were flagged for potential ineligibility to vote due to concerns about their citizenship status. Sheriff’s Office detectives worked closely with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to verify each individual’s status.
Following a thorough investigation, ICE confirmed that all 13 individuals were legally present in the United States and had voted legally. No further action was necessary for these thirteen cases.
Eleven individuals were flagged due to potential voting ineligibility stemming from prior felony convictions. Sherriff’s Office Detectives investigated each case individually.
As a result, two individuals, both of Cheyenne, were charged with False Voting. One entered a guilty plea and was fined $720. Charges against the other individual were dismissed.
Nine individuals were found not to have violated Wyoming voting laws. Reasons for this included: court records that were entered incorrectly into databases; overturned convictions following an appeal; completion of sentencing or probation not yet updated in the Department of Corrections systems; and multiple non-violent felony convictions stemming from a single incident or related events.
The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office advises individuals unsure about their voting eligibility, particularly those with prior felony convictions, to consult with the Wyoming Department of Corrections well before an election to confirm their status.
