Bat Tests Positive for Rabies at Lions Park

A bat found at Lions Park in Cheyenne on May 27 (Memorial Day) has tested positive for rabies. The bat was identified alive, on the ground, at the base of a tree when it was discovered. Animal Control was contacted and collected the bat around 10:30 a.m.

If you or your child came into contact with the bat at Lions Park, you are encouraged to contact your primary care provider. People can contract rabies by being scratched or bitten by infected animals. Bats are especially prone to rabies and their bites are not always visible, so it is important to contact a healthcare provider if you have direct contact with one or wake up with one in your room.

Rabies, if left untreated, is fatal. Do not touch or feed wild or stray animals and treat any animal bite with soap and water and contact a healthcare provider immediately. Rabies can be successfully treated with post-exposure prophylaxis.
