It was the rubber match in the season, and the South boys outlasted East in overtime, 48-47, at Storey Gym Thursday night. The Bison qualify for the state tournament with the win, while the Thunderbirds season comes to an end.
South was in control of the game much of the first half, but led by just three, 23-20, at the half. East would come out and take control of the game in the third, thanks to a 12-0 run, to build an eight point lead. The T-birds had a six point lead, 36-30, heading into the final eight minutes.
The Bison would rally, and the game would go back and forth down the stretch. South couldn’t get a shot off at the end of regulation, and the two would head to overtime.
The Bison outscored East in the OT session, 6-5 and come away with the win. Head coach Jim Shaffer’s team used a diamond-and-one defense to limit East’s Elijah Oliver, and Shaffer said they did a decent job with the defense.
