The City of Cheyenne will now allow residents to have chickens in their back yards. The city council passed an ordinance allowing backyard chickens as long as owners meet certain requirements. Neighborhood covenants that don’t allow chickens would still be in effect. Mayor Rick Kaysen voted against the ordinance. He says he feels it is not in the best interest of the city to allow chickens and could cause a rift between neighbors.
Kaysen adds that chickens in back yards in other communities have been a mixed bag.
The chickens must be kept in a predator safe coup and be within certain space limitations. Prospective owners must have neighborhood approval. The ordinance will go into effect in about a week.
