FT. COLLINS, Colo. – In a late addition to the fall schedule, four Cowgirl tennis players participated at the Colorado State Invitational on Saturday in Fort Collins.
“In doubles we still have a lot to work on but definitely got into the system better,” UW head coach Dean Clower said. “I thought we took giant steps forward in regards to playing UW tennis in singles play. Too have this many newcomers playing the way we did is huge. If we continue to follow the process we will get to the level we are aiming for. I’m very proud of the professionalism of the young women and look forward to seeing it again tomorrow.”
UW started out in doubles with both teams splitting on the day. Miranda Talbert and Elisa Koonik defeated Lea Krajcovicova and Lily-Ana Kreutzer, 6-3, before falling to Beth Coton and Remi Immler, 6-3. Tessa van Der Ploeg and Sanne Hoekstra opened up the day with a 6-1 loss against Marissa Baca and Anna Battersby but rebounded with a 6-1 win over Krajcovicova and Kreutzer.
In singles play, the Cowgirls finished with a 3-1 mark. Talbert won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 over Battersby of Northern Colorado followed by Koonik with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Kreutzer. Hoekstra fell in the first set 6-1 but rallied to win 7-5, 6-3 to take the match against Marisa Baca. van Der Ploeg lost in a three-set battle, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, to Coton.
