Interstate 80 was closed for long periods of time through most of the weekend, from Cheyenne to Rock Springs, along with other closures around the state. Strong winds, blowing snow, and crashes were factors in closing the roads. Major Keith Groenwig, with the Wyoming Highway Patrol, says roads get shut down for various safety reasons even when the roads a dry and seem passable. He says they do that to avoid big back ups of traffic in one location.
Groenwig says local travelers can go to WYDOT’s website and fill out an application for the authorized travel program which allows local travelers to go from point to point under certain criteria even when roads are closed.
