LCCC Has First Positive COVID-19 Cases

CHEYENNE, WYOMING – Laramie County Community College’s Cheyenne campus has received notification that two students have tested positive for COVID-19.

LCCC resumed its fall semester on Monday, Aug. 24, with a limited number of in-person classes and low-density housing in its residence halls. On Thursday, Sept. 3, school officials were notified through self-reporting and local health officials that two students living in the residence hall had tested positive for COVID-19.

The two students impacted recognized symptoms related to the virus, were tested and placed in quarantine. One student is quarantining in an isolation room in the residence hall on the LCCC campus and the other student has chosen to quarantine at home. LCCC is actively working with the Cheyenne-Laramie County Health Department on contact tracing and has identified that three other students have had prolonged exposure to the positive patients, these students have also been tested and are in quarantine.

All LCCC residence hall students and staff were notified of the positive cases Thursday evening and, as an extra-precaution, LCCC will test all residence hall students for COVID-19 on Friday, Sept. 4, or Monday, Sept. 7, for those students, currently off-campus for the holiday weekend. LCCC also will conduct surveillance testing of some of the population again in 7-10 days to identify any individuals who may be pre-symptomatic or asymptomatic.

LCCC takes the safety of its students and staff seriously and reminds all students and employees of the importance to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing.

“We were aware that this scenario was likely to happen, and while we had hoped it wouldn’t, I feel we have a solid plan in place to keep our students and employees safe,” stated Dr. Joe Schaffer, President of LCCC.

LCCC’s Return to Business plan is available at lccc.wy.edu/covid. The plan outlines the operations of the college and guidance for face coverings, personal hygiene and daily health self-screenings.
