Report of a Gun, Traffic Stop Leads to School Lockdowns in Cheyenne

A report of a gun inside South High School Thursday afternoon led to the school being put into lockdown and Johnson Jr. High School and Goins Elementary were placed into a secure perimeter.

According to Cheyenne Police, a School Resource Officer received a report that a firearm was inside of South High School. A K-9 team specializing in firearms detection from the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office was called in to sniff search the building.

At the same time, an unrelated incident occurred near the 500 block of Snyder Avenue – an officer conducted a high-risk traffic stop on a stolen vehicle. Due to the proximity of the schools, and the tip officers had received regarding the firearm, the decision was made to place the schools into a lockdown for the safety of students and staff.

No evidence of a firearm was found  and the traffic stop was resolved a short time later.
