Today the Senate passed a defense policy bill that would strengthen the military and authorizes funding for programs and activities vital to Wyoming’s National Guard and F.E. Warren Air Force Base.
U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., voted in favor of the fiscal year 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which determines America’s defense policy and authorizes spending for the military.
“This bill would provide flexibility for our military to make targeted investments for the future, including at Cheyenne’s F.E. Warren Air Force Base,” Enzi said. “It also includes important reforms that would ensure we can confront our national security challenges in the coming years.”
The defense bill would authorize additional funds to accelerate the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent program, which is the replacement missile to an intercontinental ballistic missile currently housed at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, and the UH-1N replacement program, which would provide F.E. Warren with new security forces helicopters to replace the current Vietnam-era helicopters. Additionally, this bill would authorize a 2.6 percent pay raise for members of the Armed Forces as well as increase the number of troops in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. It also includes cyber provisions that would enhance the Defense Department’s ability to respond to cyberattacks.
The Senate passed this defense authorization legislation by a vote of 85-10. The House passed an NDAA bill 351-66 in May. Before becoming law, the Senate-passed NDAA must be reconciled with the similar legislation passed in the House and be signed by the president.
