Enzi, Lummis Re-Elected to U.S. Congress

By Associated Press – 4 Nov’ 14

In many respects, Republican U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, returned by Wyoming voters to Washington for another six years, won his re-election bid back in January.

Liz Cheney, the elder daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, launched a formidable primary challenge to Enzi last year. However, Cheney found little mainstream support and dropped out in January, citing family health issues. Enzi cruised through the primary.

His Democratic opponent, Charlie Hardy, was too liberal and too underfunded. The independent and Libertarian candidates were nonfactors in the race and had a better chance of polling closer to Hardy than Enzi.

Meanwhile, Republican U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis easily won a fourth term, though the occasion was bittersweet. Lummis’ husband, Alvin Wiederspahn, a former state legislator and preservationist, died on Oct. 17 at age 65.

Lummis faced three candidates who were opponents in name only. Democrat Richard Grayson, an Arizona political gadfly, was on the ballot because no Wyoming Democrat entered the primary. Grayson never set foot in the state.

The best the Libertarian and Constitution party candidates could do was jockey to see if either could poll closer to Grayson.
