A Cheyenne teen has been found guilty of murder after being accused of shooting a man in the head at point-blank range last October.

A jury chose to convict 17-year-old Phillip Sam Tuesday of first-degree murder and 12 counts of aggravated assault and battery with a deadly weapon.

Sam had allegedly taken a gun to a pre-arranged fight at a park and fired the weapon at a group of his peers.

Prosecutors alleged that Sam approached 19-year-old Tyler Burns and shot him in the head as he pleaded for his life. Sam’s attorney argued that Sam acted in self-defense and asked the jury to find him guilty of a lesser charge.

If Sam’s conviction holds, he’ll likely be imprisoned until he’s at least 41.
