The Cheyenne South boys basketball team was off to a fast 5-1 start, and ranked #3 in Class 4A. The Bison opened up the Taco John’s Invite at home against the #1 team in Class 3A, the Riverton Wolverines. It was a rematch of last year’s 4A state tournament first round matchup, won by the Bison. This time, Riverton got the win, 58-46, pulling away down the stretch.
South jumped out to a 15-6 first quarter lead, and would extend that to 20-8 early in the second. But Riverton battled back, thanks to a 7-0 run, to cut the lead to four at the half, 22-18.
Both offenses picked up the pace in the third period, thanks in part to the three-ball for the Wolverines. But South would take an eight-point lead, 40-32, midway through the third. After that, it was all Riverton, as they went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game entering the final eight minutes.
The Wolverines outscored the Bison 26-6 down the stretch.
Fuji Waters led South with 15 points, while Mark Beasley added ten. The Bison fall to 5-2 on the season.
