Mayor Orr Announces New Fire Chief

City 7-13-2017

Cheyenne Mayor Marian Orr on Wednesday announced Greg Hoggatt will serve as Cheyenne’s next Fire Chief pending City Council’s approval of her appointment.

Hoggatt has over 29 years of professional firefighting experience and currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Operations/Emergency Manager in Boynton Beach, Florida and will assume responsibilities in Cheyenne on September 1.

Orr said because of the importance of the position, she conducted a nationwide search for Chief Martin’s replacement when he announced his retirement February 28th.

Orr announced the appointment via email to Cheyenne firefighters on Wednesday.

“We had several outstanding candidates apply for this position and I believe Chief Hoggatt will be the best fit your department, as well as the community of Cheyenne,” Orr said. “He and his wife Susan are looking forward to moving to Cheyenne, and becoming active members in the community.”

“I believe his leadership and experience is just what we need to strengthen and grow the Cheyenne Fire and Rescue Department,” she said. “I will be speaking with him regarding his next trip to Cheyenne, and I will arrange for a ‘meet-and-greet’ so that each of you will have the opportunity to welcome him.”

Hoggatt has served in his current position in Boynton Beach— with a four-month break in 2016 to serve as Interim Chief — since January, 2012. He also served as Deputy Chief Paramedic, Assistant Chief Paramedic, District Chief Paramedic, Lieutenant Paramedic, Engineer Paramedic, Firefighter Paramedic, and Firefighter EMT at the Orlando Fire Department. Hoggatt has a Bachelor of Arts degree in organizational management from Warner Southern College in Lake Walls, Florida and a Masters degree in Public Administration from Barry University.

Orr said Hoggatt’s professional experience, education, and leadership abilities contributed to his hire.

“Greg has a strong reputation as a leader,” she said. “We need someone who has been in the trenches, understands the culture, and can keep an already-outstanding team together. Greg is a firefighters’-firefighter.”

“As we’ve seen in the past week alone, we have an exemplary team of firefighters here in Cheyenne,” Orr said. “We are blessed to have these young individuals laying their lives on the line for us every single day.”

“Thank you to Interim Chief Tom Schingle for leading this department during the search,” Orr said. “He did an excellent job.”
