Judge Denies Request To Suspend Lawsuit On Gay Marriage

A Wyoming judge has declined to summarily rule on the constitutionality of a state law that specifies marriage is limited to one man and one woman.

But Laramie County District Court Judge Thomas Campbell also decided at a hearing Tuesday not to suspend a lawsuit filed by four gay couples and a gay-rights advocacy group.

In asking Campbell to rule immediately, the couples and the group Wyoming Equality point to recent federal court rulings upholding gay marriage. Campbell says he will revisit the request after further proceedings.

The judge also denied a request by attorneys for Wyoming to suspend the lawsuit pending a possible U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the issue of gay marriage.

Campbell said it’s not yet known for certain the U.S. Supreme Court will consider gay marriage.
